SVP '09: Yikes

SVP is in Brisol, England next year! Yahoo! I can go to London and see the natural history museum and Darwin's grave (and house), and various other things!

Wait, how much are plane tickets? $1350 for the cheap seats? And that doesn't include a week spent in London before the conference itself--hotel room plus food would probably eat up some more moolah. And then it would be off to Bristol, where more hotel costs and food would further set me back. Add to that the cost of whatever swag I would inevitably buy at SVP and the natural history museum, and we're talking...hmm...carry the five...a shitload of money.

I can't afford that right now, though it's almost a year out. Right now, I think the most parsimonious thing to do would be to commit to conferences held in the United States. Even going to Cleveland (halfway across the country) was a hard pill to swallow, financially speaking. Just throwin' that out there.

I really don't know what you're complaining about. I just wish it was possible to get a plane ticket to anywhere from Perth for as little as $1350... 'grumble'

We're happy when getting to and from Donetsk (closest airport to my in-laws) is that low...gah.

There is always GSA in Portland next year. I have noticed that when SVP is out of the country (such as when it was in Ottawa) many people go to GSA instead (if they can not obtain funding from their institution for out-of-country travel). And often GSA will have more paleo sessions to handle the extra load of paleo talks, since more people will send their abstracts there than to SVP if they know they can not go.

There are also several smaller paleo events going on over the next year before SVP if you are interested in those. That is what I am doing since I know I will most likely be unable to attend SVP in Bristol due to money issues. On the plus side for Bristol however, I have heard rumors that there may be door rooms available for those who are interested (this is unconfirmed)

that shoudl read "dorm rooms" not "door rooms" ...sorry

I'd save your money for going to Philly in 2010.

Or Pittsburgh for 2010 ;)

I make less than you and would be glad to pay $1350 to get across the pond.

Surely you can stop buying video games long enough to save $1350? That's like a PFD check.

(Of course, if I save my money instead of buying a video projector, that's about a third the way there right there...)

I was all ready for this until I lost my job. :( I've had a student loan in deferrment since last year that's coming due again, too. It's not looking good for my being able to go.

But that won't stop me from getting a passport.
